King Poobah
Artist Bio
Sovereign of empty space, czar of the far out, magistrate of the chasm in the void, monarch of a member-less caste, King Poobah rose to power in the state of delusion provoked by ceaseless foraging deep in the dark archives of ecological documentaries. The lord of the illogical claimed dominion over the vacuum, and subsequently declared that his reign would bring beats, grooves, riffs, licks, jams and other exotic treasures to his domain and his subjects.
King Poobah, as all sovereigns are, is in a constant state of war with all but his own subjects. This leviathan’s methods of war employ techniques like sample chopping, sound sequencing, finger drumming, and scratching...but never biting. Combined, these tools make up an Arsenal exclusively utilized to proliferate notions of the natural, the order of the organic, and the law of the landless.

Upcoming Release
'Natural Coarse'
Filled with Jingle-y dreamy melodies, groovy crunchy basslines, tight punchy drums, atmospheric arrangements, and samples pulled from early ecological documentaries, Natural Coarse brings a unique approach to the Instrumental Hip-Hop genre.
After years of producing sample-based Hip-Hop in other projects, this work represents a move by King Poobah to emphasize original songwriting and arrangement while preserving the sonic qualities of Hip-Hop and Pop Electronic.
Conceptually, this album attempts to re-mystify the natural world by exposing some of the most quirky and impressive behaviors in the animal kingdom and provokes the listener to interrogate their relationship to the environment. All in all this record serves as an example of King Poobah’s capabilities as a solo artist and songwriter.

Past Projects
Before King Poobah became the proxy monarch we have come to know and love he was most notable as the frontman of The Rafters Music Group; an underground avant-garde hip-hop duo consisting of a lyricist and a producer.
Once upon a time, King Poobah was the lyrical mind behind the works of The Rafters, helping to create a culture of hip-hop in the San Gabriel Valley DIY music community. Having Co-Produced many of the later works of the duo, King Poobah retired the project to pursue instrumental production after moving to New Orleans, LA.

Crown of Down is a chill and wavy Lo-Fi Hip-Hop Beat Tape. Including 19 tracks and over 45 minutes of quality content, the record has a laid-back study-friendly energy level, while still prompting a strong head knock with driving and gritty drums. The songs were assembled on SP series drum machines and are full of the quintessential tonal qualities and FX that make these samplers iconic. ‘Crown of Down’ utilizes samples from vintage nature documentaries to add an avian motif to the soft melodies and punchy drums.
'Plume of Doom'
'Plume of Doom' is an Instrumental Hip-Hop album with 20 tracks of boom-bap, lo-fi, broken beat, and chill hop, all with an old-school feel. This project is upbeat and dancey at times and aggressive and hard-hitting in others. Heavily chopped and affected sampled melodies are paired with punchy and driving drums to create a gritty tone and vintage vibe that make this album flow seamlessly from one track to the next. 'Plume of Doom' is a project designed to capture the attention of the Hip-Hop head, while also finding a home in the
background of a study session
or long drive.
